Architect Talk
Caroline Pidcock, Director – PIDCOCK Architecture + Sustainability & Resource 88
Date: Thursday, September 17th 2009
Time: 6:15pm (Refreshments) 7pm (Start)
Cost: Free
In the middle of 2008, Caroline Pidcock Architects moved to new premises at Resource 88 - Centre for Sustainable Practice in Redfern, and was renamed PIDCOCK - Architecture + Sustainability. These changes confirmed the focus of the practice on sustainability, in design, advice and operations. Their work currently includes design and advice on many residential, community and school projects across Sydney and NSW. Through these projects, they are exploring how resourceful architecture can contribute to a more positive future. Their new premises - a project they designed and helped develop - allows them to be located in a sustainable building, that is conveniently located and enables them to easily connect in low carbon ways to a wide variety of people and places.
In addition to being director of PIDCOCK and Resource 88, Caroline is Industry Representative on the Australian Building Codes Board, Member of Bicycle NSW Board, and ambassador for both the Al Gore Climate Change and 1 Million Women projects. Caroline has enjoyed previous roles as President of the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council, President of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in NSW, Member of the NSW Architects Registration Board and adjunct professor/lecturer at a range of universities in NSW.
What Caroline will be covering on the night:
· update on Al Gore slide show to remind us why sustainability is critical
· introduction to her ideas on resourceful architecture
· a range of past, current and future projects that illustrate this thinking

Sustainable Living Series
In Partnership with:
Part 8: Insulation & Carbon Neutral Homes
Date: Tuesday, October 6th 2009
Time: 6pm (Refreshments) 6:30pm (Start)
Cost: Free
Speakers: Cameron Rosen, Australian Living
Rav De Silva, Dynamic Composite Technologies
As the world’s attention becomes more focused on global warming, architects and other building professionals are challenged to meet increasingly stringent energy-efficiency standards.
How will you meet those requirements while maintaining the integrity of your creative vision and avoiding a budget blowout?
The drive for energy efficient buildings is leading to improved air tightness, the installation of bulk insulation and a failure to consider the building envelope holistically is leading to roof space and interstitial condensation. The subject of mould, mildew, timber rot, corrosion and loss of thermal resistance is of great importance and concern in the construction industry today.
Topics and outcomes of this seminar:
· Designing a carbon neutral home
· Condensation risk analysis
· Sick buildings
· Section J compliance
· Achieving long term R-Values

Speaker: Amanda Falconer - author, renovation survivor and building industry professional
Amanda is Sydney-based and for the last decade has worked in the building industry. She is not only the marketing manager of a large building materials company, but also the executive editor of LookHome™ magazine, a guide to renovating and building. The Sunday Age described the book as “exhaustive but user-friendly” and “recommended for anyone considering renovation.” Archicentre Managing Director Robert Caulfield described The Renovator’s Survival Guide as an “enlightening and entertaining book which gives a first hand look at some nightmares and how they could have been avoided.”
In her talk on kitchen renovation Amanda will outline not only some key design tips, but also some of the construction essentials.
Topics to be covered on the night include:-
1. The trends in colour, materials and sustainability
2. Key design tips and common layouts
3. The construction checklist
